Lines of business

The TAURON Group is a vertically integrated utility that holds a key position in electricity distribution, supply and generation in Poland. The TAURON Group operates in the following lines of business:

The mining segment entails hard coal extraction, enrichment and sales. Operations in this line of business are conducted by the TAURON Wydobycie (Mining) subsidiary consisting of two coal mines: Janina and Sobieski.

The Janina Coal Mine operates on a 62.3 km2 mining area. Coal is currently being mined on three levels: 118, 119/2 and 201/1 with the 203/3, 203/4 and 207 levels to be used in the future. Taking into account the deposit’s geological conditions and its identification it is estimated that the effective coal resource base will ensure stable operations of the coal mine at the assumed extraction volume for approx. 80 – 100 years.

The Sobieski Coal Mine operates on a 59 km2 mining area. Coal is currently being mined on levels 207, 209 and 304/2, solely using the longwall top coal caving system. Coal is extracted at the height of 1.9-4.8 m. Coal faces are 300 m long. The coal mine’s resources support mining for approximately 50 years under the current production model. The area currently being mined borders fields where exploration is underway to determine the possibilities of extracting coal in the future.

TAURON Mining’s coal mines have access to thermal coal resources representing approximately 20 percent of Poland’s overall hard coal resources.

The generation segment entails generating electricity and heat from conventional sources as well as biomass technology as the sole fuel and in co-generation. Operations in this line of business are conducted by the TAURON Wytwarzanie (Generation) subsidiary.

TAURON Generation is Poland’s second largest electricity generator. The company’s installed electric capacity is 4,506 MW and its achievable thermal capacity is 1,283 MW. TAURON Generation consists of five power plants: Jaworzno III, Łaziska, Łagisza, Siersza and Stalowa Wola.

The heat segment involves the generation, distribution and supply of heat, and to a lesser degree other energy market products. Operations in this line of business are conducted by the TAURON Ciepło (Heat) subsidiary. This company consists of combined heat and power plants in Katowice, Tychy and Bielsko Biała as well as a number of local heating plants. The company’s total achievable thermal capacity is 1,282 MW, while its installed electric capacity is 281 MW.

TAURON Heat’s district heating network is 1,050 km long, while the number of consumers using the district heating supplied by TAURON exceeds 700 thousand.

The Renewable Energy Sources (RES) segment includes electricity generation from renewable sources. Operations in this line of business are conducted by the TAURON Ekonergia subsidiary. This company runs 35 hydroelectric power plants located in southern Poland and 4 wind farms in the Pomerania and Opole provinces. The total installed capacity in hydroelectric power plants is 140 MW and in the wind farms it is 183 MW.

The distribution segment involves the distribution of electricity using distribution grids located in southern Poland. Operations in this line of business are conducted by the TAURON Dystrybucja (Distribution) and TAURON Dystrybucja Serwis subsidiaries.

TAURON Distribution is Poland’s largest distributor of electricity. It distributes 47.9 TWh of electricity in an area covering 58 thousand km2 constituting almost one-fifth of Poland’s landmass. Electricity is distributed to approx. 5.4m customers via TAURON’S distribution grid.

The supply segment includes the supply of electricity to end users, wholesale electricity trading and trading and management of CO2 emission allowances (carbon credits), property rights related to certificates of electricity origin, as well as fuels. Operations in this line of business are conducted by TAURON Polska Energia, TAURON Sprzedaż (Supply), TAURON Sprzedaż GZE and TAURON Czech Energy subsidiaries. TAURON supplies electricity to customers across Poland and – on a smaller scale – the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The Customer Service segment entails customer service in supply and distribution of electricity, as well as providing support functions for TAURON Group subsidiaries responsible for financial and accounting services and ICT services. Operations in this line of business are conducted by TAURON Obsługa Klienta (Customer Service) subsidiary.

The Other segment includes the production of sorbents and stone (including limestone) extraction for the needs of the power, steel, construction and road construction sectors. The segment’s operations also include trading of electricity and derivative products.
